According to the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, 2024 Cape May County Tourism Report entitled “Is there a “new” normal”, since 2022, the hospitality industry in Cape May County, has encountered several inefficiencies that affect operational performance, guest satisfaction, and overall profitability. Despite robust post-pandemic recovery, the total direct tourism spending reached $7.714 billion in 2023, a 4.1% or $305.5 million increase in visitor spending over 2022. However, the visitor numbers are still down almost 1% since pre-pandemic numbers. And let’s not discuss the impact inflation numbers are likely going to have on visitor numbers. Challenges continue to persist, and they likely are not going to be less challenging any time soon. Researching the data for this article, I identified the following inefficiencies in the hospitality industry, can you, as a hospitality business owner, relate to any of these?
Identified Inefficiencies:
- Decline in Traditional Lodging Options: According to the Cape May County Department of Tourism, since 2000, Cape May County has lost nearly 5,000 hotel rooms, approximately 13% of its total rooms, due to conversions into condos, townhouses, and vacation homes.
- Labor Shortages: The seasonal nature of tourism in Cape May County leads to difficulties in attracting and retaining staff during peak seasons, impacting service quality.See the Census.gov population numbers to see how this really impacts the local labor market.
- Seasonal Demand Fluctuations: The county’s economy is heavily seasonal, as those of us who live here, know all too well. With the population swelling over a million residents on weekends during the summer tourism season, leading to challenges in maintaining consistent staffing and service levels. According to Census.gov, the year-round population is almost 94,000 people. In the summertime months, the population soars to almost 1 million.
- Operational Inefficiencies: Manual, inefficient, and lack of standardized processes in reservations, check-ins, and guest services can result in errors and delays, diminishing the guest experience.
- Guest Experience Consistency: With a diverse range of accommodations, from traditional hotels, motels, B&B’s, and let’s not forget privately owned vacation rentals (Airbnb’s), ensuring a consistent and high-quality guest experience across the board becomes even more challenging for business in Cape May County.
- Energy Management: Although the ageless charm of Cape May County adds to the charm, the older infrastructure cannot escape time. Many properties lack modern energy-efficient systems, leading to higher operational costs and environmental concerns.
